Why care about external catheters

It can be frustrating to be called for consult on a patient with moisture-associated skin damage stemming from an external catheter . Some of this skin breakdown can be prevented with several key strategies :
Advocate for an advanced external catheter . Leverage your expertise to recommend an external catheter that helps reduce excess moisture . Although the condomstyle catheter has been the standard for decades , improvements have been made over the years and female versions are also available now . Condom-style catheters generally don ’ t stay on well and have trouble adhering . “ If you ’ re using them for incontinence , the patient ends up being pretty wet most of the time ,” says Medline National Clinical Product Specialist Mary Pat Eble , MSN , RN . The other common external catheter , the “ baggie ” type , may still put patients at risk for moisture and incontinence associated dermatitis ( IAD ), Eble notes .
Ensure proper prep . Use appropriate skin prep steps before applying a Men ’ s Liberty Acute ( MLA ) ™ external catheter to help protect the skin . “ But you have to wait for the prep to dry ,” Eble stresses . “ Clinicians want to go swipe , swipe and be done with it , but it ’ s 15 seconds for alcohol , 15 seconds for the skin prep , and 15 seconds to hold and warm the MLA to the glans ,” she says .
Keep a clean , dry perineal area . The other challenge with most available external catheters : You can ’ t use barrier creams or foams because they inhibit absorption of urine into the cotton fabric of external female catheters , except for Versette™ and Men ’ s Liberty , ™ notes Eble .
Be sure to check around external catheters during skin assessments and follow the strategies above to help prevent skin breakdown .
